Luxury You Can Harvest
True luxury is being able to harvest food from your own land. At Spadefoot, we design edible ecosystems, not vegetable rows. Food forests combine native trees, shrubs, and ground layers that produce year after year, while improving soil health and reducing long-term maintenance.
These interconnected systems grow more productive with time.
While your groceries are organic, that doesn’t mean the soil they grew in is clean. Conventional growing operations use inputs that can persist in the ground long after a farm or property changes hands.
We assess your site’s history and conditions to understand what your soil can support and what it’s been exposed to. We then select species best suited to your land for healthy, productive growth.
We offer two productive alternatives:
These mimic the architecture of natural forests to create a high-density food production system. We layer the system with fruit-bearing shrubs, ground covers, and herbaceous plants that work together above and below ground.
It includes low-maintenance native nitrogen fixers, like Eastern Redbud and New Jersey Tea, Bayberry, and Sweet Fern that naturally feed fruit-bearing plants and eliminate the need for synthetic fertilizers. We select companion species that naturally develop mycorrhizal partnerships below ground, helping the whole system share water and fight disease.
Compared to regular gardens that require annual replanting, a food forest gets bigger and produces more food every season.
We integrate natural design elements to create a space that helps you heal. Our sensory garden design is made for interaction by placing them near patios and walkways. We encourage you to touch, smell, and taste to enhance your senses with effortless snacking.
