Resilient Nature-Based Infrastructure Design

A Thriving Downtown Requires a Comfortable, Chemical-Free Environment

Your downtown streetscape sets the tone for your business district. When Main Street is a strip of struggling trees in compacted pits surrounded by hot pavement, residents drive through instead of walking. When it’s a shaded, inviting corridor with native plantings and seasonal color, they stop, shop, and stay.

We densely plant native tree species with plant communities that naturally suppress weeds and provide a continuous shade canopy to lower street temperatures. And because every tree in our system is chemical-free, the sidewalk plantings are safe for small children and pets when families stroll downtown.

Urban Canopy Design

We analyze your downtown’s canopy shade coverage and pedestrian traffic patterns during summer months to optimize species placement, spacing, and density. The goal is continuous shade, not isolated tree wells, creating a corridor that lowers ambient temperatures, reduces pavement deterioration, and encourages foot traffic. Utilizing data modeling, we map the areas where canopy coverage will have the greatest impact on pedestrian comfort, business visibility, and heat island reduction.

Streetscape Plantings

Below the canopy, we install native understory plantings in tree pits, median strips, and sidewalk beds that suppress weeds without herbicides, capture stormwater before it reaches storm drains, and provide seasonal bloom sequences that give your downtown a visual identity throughout the year. These plantings are “soft landings” for native caterpillars who depend on native trees for survival. Your street trees can become a butterfly sanctuary. Utilizing data modeling, we map the areas where canopy coverage will have the greatest impact on pedestrian comfort, business visibility, and heat island reduction.
