Your Land Leaves a Legacy. Let’s Create the Next Chapter.
Long Island’s landscapes are under pressure — from storms, invasive species, development, and decades of chemical inputs that have left soils depleted and waterways compromised. At Spadefoot Ecosystem Solution, we design residential landscapes that work with the land rather than against it. Every project begins with a site visit, not a plant catalog. We assess your soil, hydrology, light patterns, and existing plant communities to understand what your land is actually telling us — then build a plan that addresses what’s there, not what looks good on paper. The result is a living system: one that filters water, feeds wildlife, resists pests, and grows more resilient and more beautiful with every season.
From ecological legacy designs and stormwater management to pollinator gardens and pocket forests, every service we offer is grounded in the same field biology that has shaped Long Island’s native ecosystems for thousands of years.
Traditional landscape plans are built from the outside in. An architect creates a beautiful design, expensive greenery is installed, and problems are managed later with chemicals, irrigation, and replacement.
That happens because non-native plants are placed without regard for soil conditions, moisture patterns, light levels, or existing plant communities. When those plants struggle, inputs increase and the landscape becomes fragile instead of stable.
This approach treats land like a static surface instead of a living system with limits, tendencies, and strengths. It ignores the soil, the water, and the biology that actually keep plants alive.
We don’t start with “What looks good?”
We start with “What is already happening here?”
Every Spadefoot project begins on the ground. We walk the site and assess:
The result is a landscape design that works with the land’s tendencies instead of forcing it into submission.
Before any design begins, we visit your property and evaluate how it behaves:
This isn’t a checklist. It’s an interpretive field process grounded in experience.
We design with you, not for you.
By reading the plant communities already on your site, we can infer the mycorrhizal networks below ground, the beneficial fungal relationships that help plants share water and fight disease. This tells us what your soil can support without digging a single test pit.
Your goals matter:
Our job is to meet those goals without breaking the system that supports them.
We create a site-specific plan that strategically removes invasive species, manages stormwater using soils, grading, and vegetation, and rebuilds native plant communities suited to your conditions.
Nothing is all-or-nothing. Designs reflect gradients, tradeoffs, and change over time.
We don’t plant specimens. We establish plant communities.
We use plants that evolved over millions of years right here on Long Island, species selected for their long-term stability in our specific soils, salt exposure, and storm patterns. They’re self-sustaining, built to thrive in our salt, sand, and storms long-term. Species are selected based on:
These plants evolved together. When placed correctly, they support each other above and below ground and require fewer inputs as the landscape matures.
Nature isn’t static, and neither is your property.
We design with the evolution of your landscape in mind. Establishment happens in phases, the first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps, the third year it leaps. By Year 3, your native plant community is filling in and beginning to self-regulate. We account for when the canopy grows, when privacy screens fill in, and specific bloom sequences that keep pollinators fed across every season.
We design with the understanding that:
Your plan anticipates this. It’s meant to age well, not freeze the site in a single moment.
Like the landscape, its design should grow with you.
We create a chemical-free oasis that’s safe for your children, your pets, and the local wildlife. Healthy plant communities reduce the need for fertilizers, pesticides, and constant intervention. Lawn chemicals cause real harm beyond the grass, granular fertilizers and weed-and-feed products are mistaken for food by birds like cardinals and can be lethal. Reptiles and amphibians absorb these chemicals through their skin.
No pesticides. Ever. Not even the “organic” kind.
This is ecological real estate. The land improves as it matures.
As a Long Island homeowner, you may qualify for several rebate programs:
Up to $350 per household for installing native plants
Up to $500 for Suffolk and Nassau County property owners who install native plants or rain gardens
Up to $500 for eligible homeowners who install native plant gardens and rain barrels
Suffolk and Nassau County have local laws prohibiting the sale, introduction, and propagation of specific non-native invasive plants. We have the expertise to ensure your home’s cultivation stays compliant.
The Spadefoot team brings 100+ years of combined field experience. Our ecologists and native landscape designers are certified with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) in Erosion and Sediment Control and hold active memberships in the Long Island Native Plant Initiative. Our mission is to rebuild native habitats through sustainable landscape design.
The more you share, the better we can design for your specific conditions. There are no wrong answers — we’re reading your land, not grading it.
You live here.
Your land should work as hard as you do.
Let’s build a legacy that your grandchildren will thank you for.
Tell us about your property, site conditions, and goals—our team will assess your land and create a site-specific ecological design that works with your soil, water, and environment to deliver long-term beauty, resilience, and value.
